John Moffett has been a professional musician for over thirty five years and has performed throughout the United States, Europe, Australia, South America, and the Korean Peninsula as a free lance trumpet player and then with the United States Army. He is well-versed in all areas of musical performance including classical, pop, rock, jazz, brass quintet, dixieland and big band. Unfortunately, his trumpet playing days came to an end five years before retirement from the United States Army because of an old basketball injury, and he thought his musical days were finished. While attending graduate school to become a school counselor, his professor and mentor, Dr. Melendez O. Byrd of Norfolk State University, encouraged John to submit a proposal to present at the Virginia School Counselors Association convention. Although John had never written any songs, he was inspired by this professor to compose a few character education songs for this event. John's presentation received rave reviews, and many Virginia educators asked where they could purchase a CD of the songs performed. Continuing to compose while finishing graduate school, John was selected to present at the Virginia Counselors Association convention and for Kick-Off Training for the Portsmouth City Schools counselors. Again, the educators asked where they could purchase a CD of these songs. John quickly realized that the songs worked at the educators' level, and after completing a performance for 3rd thru 5th grade students, it became evident how much the students interacted with them, as well. John finished his Master of Arts degree in Urban Education/School Counseling in 2006 and was selected as the Virginia School Graduate Counselor of the year for Norfolk State University. Coinciding with the release of his first character education CD, We Just Want You to Know, John was selected to present at the national convention of the Pi Lambda Theta National Honor Society in Education. Based on this success, John was invited to serve on their national music scholarship committee. John continues to compose relevant and contemporary character education songs. National and state educators have heard and are excited by his songs, energy, enthusiasm, and musicianship but more importantly, by the messages of diversity, respect, doing your best, self-reliance, differences, and hope he brings to his performances. John is the President of Moffett Educational Resources, Inc. and lives with his wife of thirty six years and two Labradoodle dogs, Tyler and Griffin, near the Chesapeake Bay in Virginia. |
